O’s Notes: Klezmer meets funky, R&B with clarinetist David Krakauer “Kickin’ It For You” on the opening track of Checkpoint. That is the predominant theme and it sounds better than it reads. Keepalive is the electronics sampler who infuses some seriously funky beats into the mix with Krakauer charming the snake on the melodies and keeping the fire burning all the way through. These originals are proof that African beats permeated Eastern Europe especially on “Elijah Walks In” our favorite of the set. Guitarist Sheryl Bailey, bassist Jerome Harris and special guests John Medeski (organ) and Marc Ribot (g) help make this set rock.
