O’s Notes: Boston-based saxophonist, composer Nicholas Brust leads a quintet on his second album as a leader, Daybreak. Brust extracts rich tones from his alto sax and invites guitarist Lage Lund to exchange on melodies, sometimes in tandem throughout the set. The rhythm section is tight with pianist Julia Chen, bassist Rick Rosato and drummer Gary Kerkezou. The music flows across many tempos, cooking on “The Absence of You” and relaxing on “Diamonds and Clubs”. This is modern jazz that will be enjoyed by a wide audience including the jazz-fusion crowd.
