O’s Notes: Drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. plays with Generation Y, a quintet, for A New Beat. The core band includes Sarah Hanahan (a-sax), Benny Benack III or Anthony Hervey on trumpet, Luther Allison (p), Philip Norris (b) and Owens. These are musicians that Owens is sharing his experience with as they develop their careers. Hervey, Benack, and Allison contribute originals to go along with six standards. Milton Suggs adds soulful vocals on “Heart Full of Rhythm”. Other highlights are “Sticks”, “Bird Lives”, the mellow “Helen’s Song” with Erena Terakubo (a-sax) and Ryoma Takenaga (b), and the swinging “Chicken An’ Dumplins”.
