O’s Notes: Pianist Mike Holober leads a quintet packed with fine musicians. Tim Ries plays sax with John Patitucci on bass, Brian Blade on drums and Wolfgang Muthspiel on guitar. The unit produces some great music, nine tunes in all. The transformation of the Beatles “Blackbird” to a jazz tune is excellent. “Boo” and “Conumdrum” are strong as well. They also keep our interest when they relax the pace on songs like “Bumph”. Whether we call this neobop or fusion, it sounds very good!
