O’s Notes: This is upbeat jazz swinging from the opening number “Just A Thought”. The core of One Step Up is Rob Holmes (sax), Peter Revell (b), Dominic Smith (d) and leader LaMaestra on piano. The pace slows down as they move through the set but they continue to swing on tunes like “While We’re Young”. The title track is a showcase tune for all of the musicians but especially Smith’s drum solo. It’s Revell’s turn on “Laverne Walk” where the bass takes a prominent role up front. But the man who keeps things moving is the pianist, Dan who tickles the ivory all the way through while engaging the band to their fullest.
