O’s Notes: Following up on the limited edition 2020 release Live at the Village Vanguard, we have the 2023 release, Alive at the Village Vanguard. Both albums contain music recorded October 19-21, 2018, a truly magical engagement. Hersch is tickling the ivory and Spalding, sans bass is singing, scatting, and vocalizing, including played exchanges with the audience. The latest recording includes the five titles that were on the first release (perhaps different takes), along with “Little Suede Shoes”, “Evidence”, and “A Wish”. We enjoyed both and listened to them tirelessly, two masters at work! Delightful.
