O’s Notes: Japanese free jazz couple, pianist Satoko Fujii, and trumpeter, producer Natsuki Tamura team up for their latest collaboration, Aloft. They open with passion on “Migration”, one of the more accessible selections. Fujii is focused more on the keys than inside of the box for the session and occasionally Tamura extracts pure tones from his trumpet. But rest assured, the raspy, gruff chants from Natsuki’s horn are still present to retain the edginess we’ve come to expect from the duo. We also enjoyed “Traveling Bird” and “Lifting” in the 6-song set.
