O’s Notes: The live sessions of the Birmingham Jazz Festival in 1961 were incredible, as we’ve noted in our reviews of earlier volumes. This 2-CD set features pianist Wynton Kelly first. He’s joined by soloists Sandy Mosse and Oliver Nelson both playing tenor sax on a rousing version of “On Green Dolphin Street”. Next up is Jimmy Wilkins Big Band including a great version of “Fathead’s Blues”. There are also some great vocals from Joe Carroll. This is music that everyone should have a chance to appreciate.
