O’s Notes: Jazz-fusion pianist Omar Sosa joins forces with the NDR Big Band for Ceremony, a collection of ten original compositions. It is the fulfillment of one of his dreams, writing for and performing with the power and majesty of a large ensemble. NDR Bigband is certainly one of the worlds best! The music is complex yet lucid and rich with harmony notably the layered brass on “Changó En Esmeraldas”. Sosa is a tremendous source of energy and a great catalyst for the large ensemble. Even during the relaxed pace of “Danzón De Tus Ojos”, you feel the power of the band always on tap and ready to accent any passage when called on. The Latin colorations and Afro-Cuban rhythms present on “Cha Con Marimba” are clear reflections of Omar’s involvement. Sosa extracts a large sound from his regular band and much more so here without overwhelming the listener. Fans of fusion, big band and either of the artists will find this to be an intriguing set.
