O’s Notes: The mood is happy and the feeling right on Conversations, a collection of ten new songs written by guitarist John Stein, featuring strong interplay between the musicians. The band is John, Keala Kaumeheiwa (b), Greg Conroy (d) and David “Fathead” Newman (reeds) and they are well rehearsed. They sound good on burners as well as cool blues like “Serengeti” and “September” both with strong leads from Newman on sax and flute respectively. Stein’s versatility, moving from bop to blues and even a little bossa nova, keep the program fresh.
