O’s Notes: Bassist Ben Allison assembles a quartet including Ron Horton (t, flugelhorn), Steve Cardenas (g) and Jeff Ballard (d). Cowboy Justice has a combined Southwestern, soft Latin fusion sound. The instrumentation, particularly, Horton’s rich brass marries well with this theme. We liked Ballad’s work on “Hey Man” and the tranquility and adventure of the title track. “Blabbermouth” was another favorite mixing upbeat funk with a mellow ballad.
