O’s Notes: Deep Song is one of many tributes to the legendary Billie Holiday. Ranee makes this one work by staying within her own vocal signature rather than trying to emulate Billie. Lee’s voice is strong enough to make this approach work well. The addition of special guests Milt Hinton (b) and Oliver Jones (p) with Richard Beaudet (sax, fl), Richard Ring (g) and Archie Alleyne (d) gives her strong support and brings the overall package together. There are fourteen Holiday classics that we found enjoyable.
