O’s Notes: This is a collection featuring some of John Coltrane’s greatest compositions written between 1952 and 1962. They were recorded by a variety of different artists on Highnote records. There are a lot of underappreciated gems here. “Like Sonny” performed by Larry Coryell (g) with Cedar Walton (p) and “Straight Street” by Vincent Herring (sax) are a couple that command attention. “Impressions” is one of the more popular tunes and Frank Morgan (sax) does it justice as he does with “Equinox”. The late ‘Fathead’ Newman adds a strong rendition of “Naima” and Carlos Garnett (sax) brings some Latin flavors to “Giant Steps”. This is a compilation with a cool theme and solid execution resulting in repeatable enjoyable listening.
