O’s Notes: Cuban saxophonist and educator Luis Deniz and is now based in Toronto. El Tinajon is his debut as a leader of a fine quintet with pianist Rafael Zaldivar, bassist Roberto Occhipinti, drummer Amhed Mitchel and percussionist Jorge Luis Torres. Adis Galindo adds voice on several selections. The music includes ballads, straight-ahead bebop and a taste of jazz-fusion. We enjoyed the mellow, Caribbean vibe on “Gesture” and the vibrant “Strong and Together”. Other highlights are “Dutch Flower” and “Bolero“ in a strong outing.
