O’s Notes: Elastic is an appropriate title for this set. It stretches traditional bebop with a soulfully funky beat and cool melodies. The beat comes from drummer Brian Blade and Sam Yahel on keyboards anchoring the bass line and providing the ring of the Hammond B3. We got a preview of the some of the tracks early in 2002 in Cleveland. It sounded great then and the CD extends that feel. It’s encouraging to see Joshua take a stab at expanding jazz space.
