O’s Notes: Classically trained, South Korean pianist, composer, arranger Ellie Lee enjoys the freedom of jazz improvisation. She improved her craft, earning credentials from Berklee and William Patterson University. Escape is her latest release, celebrating her escape from the more structured confines of classical music. Her band is a quartet featuring Steve Wilson (sax), Steve LaSpina (b), and Jongkuk Kim (d). The program consists of eight compositions including “Whisper Not”, an arrangement tilted towards her classical roots. “Melrose Breeze”, “New Chapter”, and the invigorating title track are also notable.
