O’s Notes: This large ensemble swings with a free spirited approach that comes together beautifully. We attribute this to three factors: 1. Good music written by Moncur (tb); 2. Great arrangements by conductor Mark Masters and 3. Excellent musicians including Tim Hagans (t), Gary Bartz (as), Billy Harper (ts), Ray Drummond (b) and drummer Andrew Cyrille. Coaxed out of obscurity by Masters, Grachan displays his talent on his horn and even more so as a writer. Welcome back!
