O’s Notes: Gato Libre is the Japanese free fusion quartet featuring Natsuki Tamura (t), Satoko Fujii (accordion), Kazuhiko Tsumura (g) and the late Norikatsu Koreyasu (b). The unexpected death of Koreyasu makes their fifth release the last in this configuration. The bassist paired with Tamura on the first three releases before they expanded to a foursome. They remain eclectic, creative and dynamic, geared towards their dedicated audience. Forever has more rounded edges and a sense of calm that is inviting. Our favorites of the set are “Waseda” and the mellow “Japan”.
