O’s Notes: Ellen Johnson is a talented vocalist who performs without fear. She uses minimal accompaniment typically with either Larry Koonse or John Stowell playing guitar. Ellen split the program between structured and free form where she explores new territory spontaneously. The latter comes off well on “Nolan’s Notorious Nocturne” an Earthy, bluesy number with melodic, gutsy scatting “. We also enjoyed the arrangement of “Round Midnight” that includes guest Nolan Shaheed on trumpet. Form & Formless is a courageous effort that has bright spots.
