O’s Notes: This is saxophonist Nicholas Brust’s debut recording and he shines on both burners and ballads, all originals. He leads a quintet with Ben Eunson (g), Tuomo Uusitalo (g), Josh Allen (b) and Jay Sawyer (d). They open with Brust blazing on “Work Ahead” and he displays mellow tones on “Brooklyn Folk Song”. Eunson lights it up on “Adversity” alone and in unison with Brust. While we appreciated the dazzling burners, we enjoyed the passionate ballads even more so.
