O’s Notes: Violinist Jeff Gauthier combines with Nels Cline (g), Alex Cline (d), Joel Hamilton (b) and David Witham (p) to make a fusion quintet. They play a set of seven new compositions opening with “Biko’s Blues”, a mild mid-tempo track. “Friends of the Animals” blends Gauthier’s creative violin melodies with Nels’ rock-fusion guitar. The title track is a well-developed spontaneous composition that evolves into a cool vibe. The balance is more along the free jazz side of the spectrum. We enjoyed the more structured side of the set.
