O’s Notes: Joy Road is a collection of the work of the legendary baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams. I Carry Your Heart is Volume Five of the 5-CD set, the first to include lyrics. Alexis Cole is featured singing these eight tunes written all or in part by Adams. Barry Wallenstein wrote the lyrics. Cole’s voice is warm and inviting. There is also lots of attention given to instrumentation. Eric Alexander (sax), Pat LaBarbera (sax), Jeremy Kahn (p), Dennis Carroll (b) and George Fludas (d) are up to the task. They alternate tempos between silky ballads and swingers. This is billed as a Jazz For Wine Lovers Project and as lovers of both; we can say it meets the bill with a glass of red Zinfandel.
