O’s Notes: This large ensemble is highly energetic and plays modern jazz with a subtle funky beat underlying songs like “Rainbow Sign” and the syncopated “Petroglyph Extension”. The groove has a world beat with contributions from Abdoulaye Diabate (v), Dafnis Prieto (d, perc) and Cyro Baptista (perc). They contrast this with the almost country/gospel blues on “Song Of The Signs” and “Shotgun Bouquet”. Apfelbaum wrote all of the music and contributes on woodwinds, keyboards and percussion as well. It is a unique and creative set.
