O’s Notes: Saxophonist, composer Kris Allen leads a quartet with Carmen Staaf (p), Luques Curtis (b) and Jonathan Barber (d). Allen engages the band while soloing through the set of mostly original music. Chris Dingman adds vibes on three selections, mesmerizing us on the opener “Sunlight” that also includes a fine solo from Curtis. Michael Mayo adds vocals on “Trees” mimicking the bass line at the start. They simmer on “Ember” and relax on “Fallow”. Shenel Johns softens the set with vocals on “Morning” in a truly balanced recording.
