O’s Notes: The band is Clifford Carter (p), Will Lee (b), Ralph McDonald (perc), David Mann (sax) and leader Chris Parker (d). Yes, this is an experienced team that knows how to rock, jam and engage the audience and that is exactly what they did this Sunday afternoon during Detroit’s 2004 International Jazz Festival. The program is a combination of classic bop tunes like Ellington’s “Rockin’ in Rhythm” and more contemporary jazz like MacDonald’s “Just The Two of Us” and “Mister Magic”. Along with those hits, they also play strong arrangements of “All Blues” with a great bass solo from Lee and “Mister Magic”, a showcase for Carter, MacDonald, Parker and Mann. It is a very good show.
