O’s Notes: Kent Engelhart is a saxophonist, composer, and arranger who leads jazz studies at Youngstown State University. Stephen Enid plays trumpet and directs the jazz studies program at Cuyahoga Community College. The Ohio educators came together to celebrate an understated jazz composer. Madd For Tadd is a collection of The Music Of Tadd Dameron, 22 of his songs over two discs that capture jazz in its heyday, 1940s-1960s. They swing on “Dameron Stomp” featuring Brad Goode (t), and “Handy Andy” featuring Dominick Farinacci (t). Erin Keckan (vocals) leads the charge on “Lady Bird”, one several vocal tracks, softening a mostly hard charging instrumental endeavor. The leaders do a fine job with Dameron’s gems.
