O’s Notes: Rafael Payare is a Venezuelan conductor taking the world by storm. His principal role is Music Director of the Montreal Symphony but he has made or will make splashes with the San Diego Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, and numerous international venues. On this recording, he conducts Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, performed by Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal. Yes, we’ve managed to sneak in some classical music under the auspices of Big Band! It is a lively, dynamic performance, grand, and full of splendor. For jazz fans, it’s a worthy change of pace and for audiophiles, it is an exceptional recording. Our favorites are the cinematic “Stuermisch bewegt Mit groesster Vehemenz”, and the peaceful “Adagietto”.
