O’s Notes: Evan plays trumpet and teams up with a solid band including strings to back singer Hildegunn Gjendren. Math or Magic is a solid debut for Weiss as he shadows Gjendren and stretches out on several selections. They freshen early jazz forms and present them in grand splendor. Evan’s trumpet melodies are crisp. We liked his passion of the title track and the multilayered textures on songs like “The Beginning” and “What We Make Of It”.
