O’s Notes: These are mostly blue ballads that serve well as unobtrusive background music. It is tastefully done and Matt’s work on alto sax is formidable. They depart from the main theme on Hancock’s “Chan’s Song” and “Tell Me A Bedtime Story”, two pieces that drew us in for more critical listening. Cruiscuolo’s signature sound is slightly raspy and very passionate. He stands out in “Pensivity” and works well with his band that includes noteworthy veterans Larry Willis (p) and Billy Drummond (d).
