O’s Notes: As the title“Monktime“states, this is the music of the late, great pianist Thelonious Monk. Bassist Leon Lee Dorsey assembles a trio with guitarist Greg Skaff and Mike Clark on drums for the tribute. Skaff plays a prominent role in reinterpreting the melodies absent Monk’s piano and typical sax accompaniment. The band does a fine job over eight Monk classics that are still bebop but approaching jazz-fusion at times while maintaining he essence of the master.
