O’s Notes: Lee Heerspink is a guitarist, composer based in Western Michigan. But he’s garnered degrees across the US including a doctorate based on analyzing the music of Pat Metheny and John Scofield. You’ll hear a taste of that influence on Monsters Impromptu, his debut as a leader. It is a rather funky, fusion complete with excellent guitar licks, synthesizer from Dutcher Snedeker, cool drumming by Randy Marsh, Jim Afredson on organ and Caleb Elzinga on sax. They slow down a tad on “Rinse Cycle” but it’s mostly upbeat. Highlights are “Watch What Happens In The Woods”, “Preach It Gary” and the title track.
