O’s Notes: Guitarist Ryan Blotnick composed the music for Music Needs You with the listener in mind. His charts allow for lots of improvisation but the audience influences the musician’s direction. That works well on a live set but this is a studio recording! Nevertheless, they keep the music accessible. Most of the tunes have enough breathing room for the listener to latch on to the groove, especially on the title track. The mood is peaceful and easy to listen to. The band, Albert Sanz (p), Perry Wortman (b), Pete Robbins (sax) and Joe Smith (d) all provide solid inputs. Robbins wrote “The Quiet Space Left Behind” a tune that blends into Ryan’s thesis well. We liked “You Can Talk During This” and we actually preferred listening to it!
