O’s Notes: This volume captures Basie’s orchestra in their second life during the early 1950s. Basie had taken a break in 1949 along with many swinging big bands that fell out of favor at the time. Basie’s magic potion focused on a solid rhythm sexton with Freddie Green (g), Eddie Jones (b) and Sonny Page (d). There were many excellent soloists including Thad Jones (t), Frank Wess (sax, fl) and Frank Foster (sax). But all of Basie’s bands were unselfish cohesive units, a success factor that has kept the Count Basie Orchestra cooking today even after the leader died over 25 years ago! There are twelve tunes highlighted by “Shiny Stockings”, “Flute Juice” and “Eddie Jones’ Blues”.
