O’s Notes: Lawrence (sax) leads a fusion band with Eddie Henderson (t), Essiet Essiet (b), Gerald Hayes (sax), Benito Gonzalez (p) and Rashied Ali (d). The program consists of fresh music written by Lawrence (2), Gonzalez (3) and Ali (1) along with a couple of covers. We liked the layered interplay of the brass on “Quest”, the warmth of “Say It Over Again” and the edgy energy of “Starting Point”. Mystic Journey is a strong set performed by an enthusiastic team.
