O’s Notes: Mark’s baritone resonates through the crowd and into your bones. He ventures into romantic ballads, blue and true love rather than his usual bop tunes. German standout Till Brönner breathes smoky accompaniments through his muted trumpet while a full orchestra (including strings) provides depth without overwhelming the stage. The close-miked recording captures all of the nuances – no problem with Murphy, a man with excellent pitch and tone control. It’s the subtleties that surface his deepest feelings. It’s yet another dimension for Murphy and it is a class act.
