O’s Notes: Trombonist Michael Davis leads a powerful large ensemble armed with potent brass including David Mann (a-sax, fl), Steve Wilson (a-sax, s-sax), Andy Snitzer (t-sax, cl), Charles Pillow (t-sax, cl), Nick Marchioness (t), Tony Kadleck (t), Marshall Gilkes (tb), and Ryan Keberle (tb). The punch comes from the rhythm section with Andy Erwin (p), Jared Schonig (d) and either David Finck or Cole Davis on bass. There are ten original selections composed by Michael Davis or his son, co-producer Cole Davis. Mike’s youngest son Zaq (t, flugelhorn) also appears on the album. The energy is high, but not overwhelming, even when they slow down on tracks like “Three and Out”. We enjoyed the set.
