O’s Notes: Daniel Hersog conducts his Jazz Orchestra for Open Spaces, a collection of folk songs reimagined in jazz space. Six of the ten selections are Hersog originals. The orchestra is rich with talent including Noah Preminger (t-sax), Frank Carlberg (p), Dan Weiss (d), Kurt Rosenwinkle (g), Brad Turner (t), Ben Kono (oboe, s-sax, fl, cl), and Scott Robinson (b-sax, b-cl, fl). The solos are rich and plentiful. The transformation is convincing in a very energetic session balanced with warm ballads like “Shenandoah”.
