O’s Notes: This is Jake’s debut recording and he shows lots of promise. He wisely teams up with veterans Harvie S (b) and Victor Jones (d) as he makes he way through nine originals and two covers. His jazz-fusion style shows influences from Mike Stern and Pat Metheny but we also see him carving his own voice on Patterns. He opens burning on “McJazz” before settling down a bit on “Joining Hands” one of the best of the set. He shows a command of the fret board on “Not Blues” gets a little funky on “Sun Lovers” and adds complexity on “Dipole”. It is a good start.
