O’s Notes: Susan Alcorn plays pedal steel guitar cutting across country, fusion and free jazz genres. For Pedernal, a spontaneous contemporary jazz effort, she assembles a quintet with Mary Halvorson (g), Michael Formanek (b), Ryan Sawyer (d) and Michael Feldman (violin). They play an eclectic free fusion with the guitars and violin taking the lead lines together, in harmony and jousting. There is mystery and adventure in “Circular Ruins” but they save the best for last on “Northeast Rising Sun” (after they get the count right!).
