O’s Notes: There is a syncopated funky sound that pops out on the opener “Neophilia 2006” with Bennie leading the melody on bass clarinet. Daryl Munyungo Jackson does an excellent job with percussion, particularly on “Tapping Things”. Darek Oleszkiewicz (b) and Michael Stephans (d) round out the quartet. Maupin wrote all of the music for all of the songs. He switches to alto flute for the mysterious “Penumbra” one of the best of the set.
