O’s Notes: Guitarist Ben Sher lights it up on Samba For Tarsila. He is a Pittsburgh native who was influenced by another famous musician from Pittsburgh, George Benson, and we can hear that ascendancy. Ben assembles a first-rate band with Gary Fisher (p), Gregory M. Jones (b), and special guest Brazilian drummer, Vanderlei Pereira. Tarsila de Aguiar do Amaral was a Brazilian modernist painter. Her vibrant works inspired Sher’s soundscapes. We enjoyed “Twilight”, a cool cover of “Never Can Say Goodbye”, “Mas Que Nada”, and the title track in a very engaging session.
