O’s Notes: Same Mother intrigued us… Pianist Jason Moran dabbles in a wealth of approaches including a rather sedate approach on “Aubade” and “The Field” in stark contrast to the rock fusion of “Jump Up” featuring guitarist Marvin Sewell. There’s free bop on “G Suit Saltation” followed by “I’ll Play the Blues For You” which is true to the title. The chaos of both versions of “Gangsterism…” acts as bookends for the session. Yes, Same Mother but decidedly different dads!
