O’s Notes: The trio Lorne Nehring (d), George Koller (b) and David Braid (p) are among Canada’s finest jazz musicians. We are less than two minutes into track one before we hear the dexterity of Braid. The music program is based on compositions of Canadian trumpet/flugelhorn player Freddie Stone. After a stint with Ellington’s band and some work with Mingus he returned to Canada where he developed his own voice. We do hear the influence of his mentors in his work. The translation of Stone’s work is good and brings his music into the new millennium.
