O’s Notes: Jeff Oster is a singer and Peter Welker plays trumpet. They come together to record 13 classics arranged and produced by Welker. The band includes polished veterans Chris Ambeger (b), Mel Martin (sax), Pete Levin (B3) and Dave Matthews (p). Oster’s voice is soft and raspy, sort of a combination of Chet Baker and Mel Torme. It is inviting and works well on these standards. He shares the stage with the musicians leading to a balanced and swinging session. Among the best tracks are “This Masquerade”, “Laura” and “Speak Low” with nice work on guitar from Randy Vincent. We also enjoyed the title track and the popping spirit of “Grovin’ High”.
