O’s Notes: Gato Libre has blossomed into a quartet with Kazuhiko Tsunura (g) and Norikatsu Koreyasu (b) led by trumpeter Natsuki Tamura and his wife. Satoko Fujii (accordion). It was originally a duo with Tamura and Koreyasu. The program consists of eight Tamura originals. “Waterslide” combines a festive trumpet melody with the sad tones of the accordion. “Scorpion” is more loosely structured free jazz. Most of the songs fall into one of these patterns. Gato Libre serves as a creative outlet for these talented musicians but is geared towards a small, dedicated audience, even in Japan where they have a regular engagement at Tokyo’s Otoya-Kintoki. But as Tamura-san says, “Gato could suddenly become the next big thing.”
