O’s Notes: Dave Mullen was a child prodigy, then graduated from Berklee, and found his way to NYC where he’s performed and recorded with numerous jazz, R&B and pop stars. Solace is his latest recording with Jon Cowherd (p), Hans Glawischnig (b), EJ Strickland (d), and special guest Jim Seeley (t). The rhythm section is fierce, chopping it up on “The Grind”, providing a great platform for the horns. And yes, Dave does in fact play two saxes simultaneously as shown on the cover! We liked “For Michael” (Brecker), “Shanna Shuffle” and “Like Rahsaan” (Roland Kirk) along with the cover of “Satin Doll”. This is energy packed with an extra dose of groove!
