O’s Notes: Guitarist Tom Guarna has been lurking in the background with appearances on countless albums including appearances with Brian Blade and John Patitucci. But he steps out as a leader, assembling a quintet for Spirit Science with Ben Wendel (sax, bassoon), Aaron Parks (keys), Joe Martin (b) and Justin Faulkner (d). The guitar and sax harmonies are excellent on “The Trion Re”. We also liked the adventurous “A Reflection On A Reflection”, “Platonic Solids” and the mellow title track.
