O’s Notes: Drummer Bruce Cox leads a quartet with Abraham Burton on sax, pianist Aruan Ortiz and bassist Gianluca Renzi. The program is mostly original cuts with a few covers thrown in. “Dark Matter” drifts into free space before Burton warms things up on “Darn That Dream” a great prelude to put us in that “Funky State Of Mind”. “Evidence” swings with calypso underpinnings then Cox asserts himself on “Les Rayons” a warm-up for the funky “Demi” and closer, “Night Dreamer”. This is a strong session and Cox is a player with a long runway.
