O’s Notes: Tenor saxophonist Dave Wilson talks a stab at the work of the legendary John Coltrane with Stretching Supreme. The band is solid with pianist Kirk Reese, bassist Tony Marino, and drummers Alex Ritz or Dan Monaghan. They play several of Trane’s classic tunes. No one can equal Coltane’s prowess and Wilson steers clear of that trap. His approach is admirable, allowing us to reminisce and engage in the head-bobbing grooves. Our favorites are “Naima”, “A Love Supreme” and “Dear Lord”. The music was recorded live on two separate sessions in Philly 10/19/2017 and 3/29/2018 at Chris’ Jazz Cafe.
