O’s Notes: This collection is a sampling of Sonny during his breakout period in the early 1950s on Prestige Records. Equally adept at both burners like “I Feel A Song Coming On” and ballads like “My Ideal”, Sonny made hay on nearly everything he touched. There are ten of his best here including “Tenor Madness” with John Coltrane. Other supporting musicians are Red Garland (p), Paul Chambers (b), Kenny Drew (p), Clifford Brown (t) and Max Roach (d). This is actually a sampling from the complete Prestige recordings of Rollins’, an excellent collectors set
